Rare Antique George IV Mason’s Patent Ironstone “Muscove Duck” Plate, c.1830–1845

A remarkable survivor from the Regency period, this rare George IV Mason’s Patent Ironstone plate represents one of the most celebrated achievements in early 19th-century English ceramics. Produced between 1815 and 1825 by the prestigious Mason’s factory at Lane Delph, Staffordshire, the plate showcases the highly sought-after “Muscove Duck” pattern, a design prized by collectors for its rich decoration, historical significance and enduring beauty.

During the early decades of the 19th century, English potteries were captivated by the exotic influence of the East. Mason’s became renowned for combining the durability of its revolutionary Patent Ironstone body with vibrant Chinoiserie-inspired decoration, creating pieces that rivalled expensive imported porcelain while being robust enough for everyday use.

At the heart of this plate is a beautifully detailed scene depicting ducks gliding through tranquil waters beneath striking orange lotus blooms and dramatic cobalt blue scholars’ rocks. The design combines transfer printing with meticulous hand-painted enamels, demonstrating the skilled craftsmanship that made Mason’s wares highly desirable among Regency households.

The richly ornamented scalloped border is equally impressive, decorated in a traditional Imari-inspired palette of deep cobalt blue, burnt orange and iron red, all enhanced with hand-applied gilding. This fusion of Eastern inspiration and English ceramic innovation perfectly captures the decorative tastes of the George IV era.

Turning the plate over reveals one of its most important features: the highly collectable early burgundy printed backstamp featuring a rounded crown above a drooping banner inscribed “Patent Ironstone China.” This distinctive mark firmly dates the piece to the coveted 1830–1845 production period and confirms its place among the earliest generations of Mason’s Patent Ironstone.

Substantial in weight and displaying the characteristic cool bluish undertone associated with genuine early ironstone, this plate offers both decorative appeal and historical significance. Condition

Please refer to the photographs for a detailed assessment of condition. As expected with an antique of over 200 years of age.Excellent antique condition. The colours remain incredibly bright and vibrant. There are absolutely no cracks, chips, utensil knife marks, or restorations. There is only some very minor, age-appropriate surface rubbing to the inside gilded rim, which is standard for utility ironstone of this vintage and does not detract from its striking display quality.
