Vintage Glassware

Are you passionate about antiques and vintage homewares? Do you find beauty in old and classic décor? Or do you just love vintage styles in the home?

The History of Glassware

Glass was first produced around 5000 years ago in Western Asia, Egypt, and Mycenae. Today, “glass” is associated with transparency; but the earliest glass was actually opaque in appearance. In 16th Century BCE, glass vessels were produced in Mesopotamia and Egypt. During Egypt’s 18th Dynasty (around 1570 BCE), glass vessels were created under instruction by the royal family and were given as gifts to powerful people.

Wine and other alcoholic beverages have long been associated with special occasions, and when transparent glass began to be produced in around 8th Century BCE, this opened up new possibilities to actually admire the contents of the glass. Drinking vessels that had previously been made from metal or clay were quickly replaced with glass. Over time, shapes and colours evolved to create modern day glassware that we see today.

Why Choose Vintage Glassware?

‘Vintage’ means anything that has been produced in the past that is typical of its period. When you buy a piece of vintage glassware, you are purchasing a piece of history. Vintage glassware generally covers any decorative containers, bowls, and platters that were produced as drinking vessels between the late 1800s-mid 1900s.

Some antique collectors purchase glassware for display purposes only, in order to add a unique look and feel to the home. Vintage glassware can help transport us to another era, adding an extra special touch to your home’s interior. However, others purchase vintage glassware to use for cooking and serving, as it would have been used originally. You could host a vintage party with an antique drinks service, or simply use these precious treasures in your day-to-day activities.

You could choose to feature an item of vintage glassware as a statement piece or collect your favourites and display them in a thoughtful arrangement to inject a sense of personality to the room. We recommend placing vintage glassware in your kitchen, dining room, or living room for maximum impact. You could also pair vintage glassware with other antique décor to create an intriguing assortment of shapes and colours.
